When: Tuesday 8/9, 2 - 4 pm ET

This lecture will address three main topics.  The first will cover rock slopes including failure types, rock strength and stability analysis. The second topic covers cover slope stabilization methods for loose blocks and rock slabs, as well as other failure types. Difference between active and passive methods.  Use of bolting, anchors, shotcrete, reinforced concrete grids and pillars to support rock blocks.  The use of steel meshes, trenches and barriers to trap sliding blocks and rock sheds. The third topic will address drainage and erosion protection issues.  This includes superficial and internal drainage details, erosion protection using vegetation, geosynthetics and biomesh, drainage of walls and protection against debris flow and mudslides.  Finally, drainage maintenance issues. The Slope course is based on the Handbook of slope stabilization, a copy of which will be made available to the participants.

Date: Wednesday August 9.  2 - 4 pm ET Credits: 2 PDH Units

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • How to select rock failure type and strength parameters for limit equilibrium analysis;
  • How to deal with computer programs for rock slope analysis
  • How to stabilize rock slopes using active and passive methods like bolting and rock anchors, as well as passive methods, like meshing, flexible barriers and rock shed. Hazard reduction methods.
  • How to select a drainage system to last, how to deal with very high slopes, drainage of walls, alternatives for surface protection, debris flow protection and maintenance issues.
