Few building materials possess the environmental benefits of wood. It is not only our most widely used building material but also one with characteristics that make it suitable for a wide range of applications. Efficient, durable, and useful wood products produced from trees can range from a minimally processed log at a log-home building site to a highly processed and highly engineered wood composite manufactured in a large production facility. One of the greatest attributes of wood is that it is a renewable resource. If sustainable forest management and harvesting practices are followed, our wood resource can be sustained indefinitely. This course provides an introduction to wood as a sustainable raw material, types of forest certification programs, and a broad glossary of wood product terminology. The content of this course is “Wood as a Sustainable Material” which is part of the “Wood Handbook” by the USDA Forestry Service.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student should understand:
  • Wood as a Green Building Material
  • Concept of "Embodied Energy"
  • Carbon Impact of Wood Products
  • Sustainability of Wood
  • Overview of Forest Certification Programs
  • Glossary of Wood Product Terminology

    Not a good value
    2

Course is 5 pages of applicable text, and 18 pages of glossary terms. One of quiz questions is incorrect. The correct answer is “incising.” Appears to be created more for the purpose of creating a course, than sharing actual expertise. However, the links and information in the first five pages is valuable.
