Intended Audience: engineers, architects and managers who are new to structural design for blast/explosion loads

PDH UNITS: 5

With the threat of bomb blasts targeting different kinds of buildings and structural applications, understanding how to evaluate and quantify bomb explosion loads is critical to ensuring resilient blast design. Delve into this engineering course prepared by Dr. Ayman A. Shama, Ph.D., PE, F.ASCE, LEED AP, ENV SP, to walk step-by-step through how you can:

  1. Evaluate blast design for different blast loads
  2. Deal with diverse detonating charges
In particular, this PDH course explores how to calculate the response of bomb explosions to improve blast loading on structures. We'll examine how to convert the energy released from detonation to a blast load that can be applied to structural elements of a building. Additionally, this online course provides and explains all the necessary charts, equations, and tables while solving several numerical applications.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss the following learning objectives:
  • Determine how to establish a blast design criteria
  • Understand how blast occurs and how blast waves initiate
  • Learn the fundamentals of blast scaling
  • Understand how to calculate TNT equivalency to bolster blast design parameters
  • Identify the differences between a confined and unconfined explosion
  • Distinguish incident blast pressures from reflected blast pressures
  • Identify a free air burst explosion and how to convert it to a pressure load
  • Evaluate the different methods involved in blast design

I used the pdf download version of the course. Course is about 50% practical and math, and 50% theoretical in terms of this is how an explosion works, effects etc. Charts are complicated with not much explanation.
