Intended Audience: engineers, and construction managers interested in the design and construction of precision measurement laboratories

PDH UNITS: 3

Examine the architectural engineering issues associated with the design of a wide variety of precision measurement laboratories. Our online PDH-approved course created by industry expert J. Paul Guyer, P.E. discusses the basic requirements that apply to any precision measurement equipment laboratory (PMEL). Topics addressed include how to overcome architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical issues to help guide professional engineers, architects, and construction managers in designing precision measurement laboratories for specific activities.

Course Outline

1. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS 2. GENERAL DESIGN CRITERIA 3. EXTERIOR DESIGN 4. INTERIOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION 5. SITE DESIGN AND ORGANIZATION 6. ANTITERRORISM 7. SERVICES 8. SUSTAINABLE DESIGN 9. SPECIFIC DESIGN CRITERIA

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • Internal and site layouts, and location of interfaces between the facility structure and equipment items
  • The commissioning process and its importance in ensuring that a facility and its components will perform as designed and intended
  • How to ensure that mission and user requirements as well as occupant health and safety are considered during design, construction, and operations for effective material selection and environmental systems
  • How to locate rooms, spaces, and equipment to ensure orderly workflow and provide security and property management
  • Why a facility site must be isolated from sources of vibration such as railroads, local heavy vehicle or aircraft traffic, crane or machine operations, foot traffic, and similar disturbances
  • How to use expansion/isolation joints in the concrete floor on the outside toe of the walls that define the conditioned area to isolate the thermal mass of the floor and reduce vibration transmission
  • How to use specialized shock mounts, airbag supports, and/or isolated massive blocks in your design
  • Importance of including a covered equipment entry in the design of precision measurement laboratories
