While there are many benefits of the design-build process, its widespread growth has burdened engineers and architects with ethical dilemmas. And with ethical issues come fee erosion and litigation nightmares. So what are those ethical issues? How can they be addressed? And...how can the design and construction community protect the role of design-build in the construction delivery process? Join us for our live webinar to walk through the 7 steps to remedy ethical issues in design-build so that it can continue to be offered as a construction delivery option in the future. In this webinar, we'll discuss the common ethical issues that arise during the design-build process, how to overcome them, and how to preserve the positive aspects of the process. In particular, we'll explore the dilemma for the engineer or architect that typically stems from a conflict between the owner’s and general contractor’s interests in the design-build process. The ethical issues that arise when subjective criteria are used to award these types of contracts are also covered.

Wednesday. June 16. 2021 | Starts at: 10 am - 12 pm ET Credits: 2 PDH units

  1. 7 STEPS TO REMEDY ETHICAL ISSUES IN DESIGN-BUILD
    3

The course was informative. Covered the basic differences between DBB and DB projects. Though as a course presenter myself, you can’t get too in- depth with 2-hour material. Speaker was a bit monotonous, but clear and audible. I think the audience could have further benefitted from a Q&A discussion at the end. The test questions matched the presentation material.

7 Steps to Remedy Ethical Issues in Design-Build

This course had little to do with engineering ethics, and much to do with an opinion that public agencies have no business procuring construction through DB. Instructor had a very limited view of different DB variations.

Strong opinion that not all of us agree with

With all due respect to the instructor’s experience it appears to be somewhat limited to certain market sectors which have, maybe appropriately, jaded his opinion against the design build process. There are other sectors where the factors that he severely discounts are truly valuable to an owner. Didn’t care for ending the course before I could raise some of these issues for discussion. Instructor’s view is that the only credible evaluation criteria is cost which I’ve come to disagree with in my 30 years of experience in this field. I deal with a number of government clients who clamor for something other than the “low bid wins the day” traditional approach that regularly leads to disappointment and change orders. Design-bid-build works well for some types of projects that are easily well defined. Design-build works much better on others both in the way that the instructor prescribes to AS WELL AS a more qualifications and teaming approach that he strongly dismisses…in my opinion.

Course content was interesting. I was never on a project that was design-build. Design-build has too many problems for the owner.
