Intended Audience: civil engineers, design and construction professionals interested in methods for geotextiles to control erosion

PDH UNITS: 3

This course will introduce you to geotextiles made from polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene, polyamide (nylon), polyvinylidene chloride, and fiberglass. You will learn about their erosion control applications. Erosion is caused by a group of physical and chemical processes by which the soil or rock material is loosened, detached, and transported from one place to another by running water, waves, wind, moving ice, or other geological sheet and bank erosion agents. Clayey soils are less erodible than fine sands and silts. You will learn about geotextile applications in bank erosion, runoff collection, diversion ditches and sediment control.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • Learn about techniques for bank erosion control using geotextiles;
  • Learn about ultraviolet radiation considerations when utilizing geotextiles;
  • Learn the purpose of cover materials and how they are applied;
  • Learn when and how geotextile anchorage is applied;
  • Learn about site preparation for geotextiles;
  • Learn about overlap and seam requirements; and
  • Learn how geotextiles are used in precipitation runoff applications.
