PDH UNITS: 3

Construction supervisors, in the traditional sense, are the representative of the owner (such as a private company or public agency) of a construction project. The construction supervisor’s primary objective is protection of the owner’s interest to see that the owner receives from the builder the construction result that was bargained and contracted for.  This course stresses the importance of having definitive working drawings and specifications as the basis for a contract between owner and builder, and how the construction supervisor uses them to control the work and assure the quality of construction delivered to the owner. Course Outline

  1. INTRODUCTION
  2. BASIC PRINCIPLES
  3. THE ESSENTIALS FOR A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT
  4. WORKING DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS
  5. THE LANDMINES
Attendees will learn a structured approach to supervision of the construction process for buildings and infrastructure that will provide the owning company or agency that it will receive construction work of the quality and utility it contracted for.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you'll be able to:
  • Learn why definitive working drawings and specifications are essential to effective quality control on a construction project.
  • Learn how the specifications define the construction work to be accomplished, the participants in the construction process, and their responsibilities and authority.
  • Learn how a Constructibility Review can be an effective tool to avoid impractical and costly construction techniques, materials and processes on a project.
  • Find out how a Value Engineering Review can be a useful cost-saving tool on a construction project.
  • Learn how a Value Engineering Incentive Program incorporated into the owner-builder contract can be profitable for both the owner and builder, and provide a cooperative approach to cost saving.
  • Learn the structure of guide specifications that have a century of successful use on thousands of construction projects, large and small, throughout the U.S. and abroad.
  • Learn how to manage the “landmines” in construction, such as change orders, requests for information, and unforseen conditions.
