This course will provide you with an introduction to the principles of cathodic protection for underground and underwater structures. You will be introduced to the physics and chemistry of the corrosion process and how to mitigate the corrosion using cathodic protection techniques. Course Outline 1. THE CORROSION PROCESS 2. TYPES OF CORROSION 3. RATE OF CORROSION 4. GALVANIC SERIES 5. INTRODUCTION TO CATHODIC PROTECTION 6. GALVANIC CATHODIC PROTECTION 7. IMPRESSED CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION This course will give engineers and others an introduction to the principles of chemistry and physics that are the basis of corrosion protection for underground and underwater structures using cathodic protection methods.

Learning Objectives

At the successful conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify and discuss:
  • Learn the chemistry and physics behind the corrosion process;
  • Learn about the different types of corrosion activity;
  • Learn the corrosion rates for different metals;
  • Find out about the importance of the galvanic series of metals;
  • Learn the fundamentals of the sacrificial anode approach to corrosion protection; and
  • Learn the basics of the impressed current process.
